“They ran out of time but we did not run out of numbers.” This was said joyously by our Acting President Dr. Riaz Akbar when the staff of the Red Cross Australia Blood Collection Unit announced that they were not going to take anymore donors because of time constraints.
Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya QLD, in liaison with Red Cross Australia organised a blood donation drive called “blood for life” at the Brisbane mosque (1 Neville Road, Stockleigh) on Saturday the 11th of March 2006. This was organised and carried out in accordance with the words of Hadhrat Maseeh-e-Maood (as) that one of the purposes that he had been sent in this world was to serve humanity.
This is the first time in the history of Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Queensland that a Red Cross mobile unit has come to our mosque and received so many blood donations in a day. This was also the first time that a Red Cross unit came to this area.
Last year members of Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya Queensland collectively gave blood at a Red Cross centre. This year we invited the Red Cross to come to our mosque so that all male and female donors could give blood conveniently. Red Cross Australia accepted our invitation and a mobile Blood Service unit was sent to our mosque to collect blood from all willing donors.
The Red Cross mobile unit started their work at 9:00 am and finished at around 4:00 pm. A total of 45 donors, including 14 female members turned up to donate blood. Due to the Red Cross' medical condition requirements, they only accepted 36 donors including 10 females.
We also invited our neighbourhood to participate in this blood donation drive and we received a very good and positive response from them. Approximately 120 invitation letters were distributed in the neighbourhood area. 10 neighbours turned up to donate blood, however, only 5 of them could donate as the Red Cross staff had to leave early to take the blood to their laboratory. The Red Cross staff was kept busy all the time with our members turning up one after another and at the end they ran out of time, but more donors were still there. As an appreciation and relationship-building step, a personal "thank you" card was given to all neighbours who came to donate blood.
A bookstall was also setup on this occasion. Our neighbours showed interest in the books and leaflets, hence, free literature was also given to them.
A number of Khuddam, Ansar and Lajna worked hard for days to make this a successful event. Tahir Jehangiri organised the event and provided the breakfast and refreshments to the donors. Mushtaq Jatt provided lunch to the donors and the Red Cross staff. Sofia Fahim liaised with the Red Cross staff to organise the female donors. Fahim Ahmed prepared and delivered the invitation letters to the neighbourhood and local newspapers.
The bookstall was setup by Mubashar Javed and Mirza Mubarak. A number of other members including Dr. Riaz Akbar, Ehsanul Haque Alvi, Qudratullah Farooq, Mohammad Arif, Ibraheem Malik and Ijaz Ahmad helped in different capacities. Please remember all these members in your prayers.
