Brief insight into the life of late Maulana Mahmood Ahmad Shahid

Mr. Mahmood Ahmad Shahid was born in Char Dukhia, a small village in Comilla district in Bangladesh (East Pakistan at the time) on 26 December, 1949. At the very early age, his parents dedicated him to the Services of Islam Ahmadiyya - a commitment he served till his last breath.

After completing his early education in Bangladesh till class 7, he moved to Rabwah, Pakistan on 19 May 1962 and enrolled in Jamia Ahmadiyya (the Ahmadiyya University - an International Islamic seminary and educational institute). He studied there for next 10 years and obtained the Degree of Shahid in 1973. During that time, he developed a close relationship with a wide range of members of Jamat - a Blessing that he always cherished in his later life. He was also fortunate to have the company of many senior Ahmadiyya scholars and elders, and used to tell the stories of their Righteousness and Acceptance of prayers.

During his time as a student in Rabwah, he served as interpreter for Bangla desk from 1967-69 under the leadership of Hadhrat khalifatul  Massih IV ra who was serving as Sadr Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya Markazia at that time.

During 1974 riots against Ahmadies, Mr. Mahmood Ahmad Shahid was detained in a Police station without any charge. He helped the injured Ahmadies who were shot on a train station.

During his years at Jamia Ahmadiyya, he was serving at different positions starting as a Sa’iq and progressed to Muntazim and Halqa Zaeem. He also got eagerly involved in Majlis Khuddam ul Ahmadiyya activities and later on served as Block Leader, Mohtamim Muqami (Rabwah) and later on Mohtamim Tarbiyyat in Majlis Amala of Majlis Khuddam ul Ahmadiyya Markazia.

In 1979, he was appointed the Head of Majlis Khuddam ul Ahmadiyya Markazia (Ahmadiyya youth organisation with participants aged  between 7 - 40 years all over the world).

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih III, Mirza Nasir Ahmad ra said about his appointment:

“… Mahmood Ahmad sahib Bengali was 5th as per voting, however, I have appointed him Sadr. He is a very sincere and devoted man, May Allah enhance his sincerity. He has served well and sought prayers.”

During the tumultuous time in Pakistan in early 1980s Maulana Mahmood Ahmad as Sadr motivated Khuddam under the advice of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih III ra and later under Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV ra to remain disciplined and organised throughout Pakistan in the face of adversity.

During his tenure as Sadr Khuddam ul Ahmadiyya worldwide, he visited various countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and America to establish and strengthen Majlis Khuddam ul Ahmadiyya. He was also fortunate to accompany Hadhrat Khalifatul Massih III ra and Hadhrat Khalifatul Massih IV ra on their trips oversees.

He also served as Wakil-e-Asha’at (Audio Video) at Tehrik-e-Jadid after 1984 for some time. He organised distribution of audio/video recordings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih’s Friday sermons and other messages to Jamaat. This service was very well organised and reached almost all Ahmadis. This continued until Jamaat was blessed with MTA Television Channel.

He was appointed as Ameer and Missionary In-Charge of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Australia on 17th July 1991 by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV ra and remained in this position for nearly 23 years. Maulana Mahmood Ahmad showed great leadership following advice from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV ra in assisting Pakistani migrant families to settle at various places in Australia in 1990s.

He also developed relationship on behalf of Jamaat with local and federal government, religious and cultural communities and charity organisations by expressing Jamaat’s peaceful teachings following the advice from Huzur aba. This has been duly recognised by various political and social figures. Jamaat has developed strong association with humanitarian and welfare organisations in the past 23 years.

During his time as Ameer Jamaat of Australia, under the guidance of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih four large mosque projects were successfully completed in Australia. This included the Khilafat Centenary Hall in Sydney, Baitus Salam Mosque Melbourne, Baitul Masroor Mosque Brisbane, guest house in Qadian and Mahmood Mosque in Adelaide. Hazrat Khalifatul Massih Khamis aba inaugurated the first three hall/mosques in his blessed tour of Australia in 2013.

Maulana Mahmood Ahmad was a true devotee of Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya. The tours of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V ata in 2006 and 2013 were a great blessing for the Jamaat. He continued his work as Ameer by spreading the message of Khalifatul Masih and enlightening Jamaat on the expectations of Huzur ata.  He remained a sincere devotee throughout his life serving Khulafa-e-Ahmadiyya.

He passed away on 23rd April 2014 in Sydney, Australia. Inna lillahe wa inna ilehe raajeoon.

By the grace of Allah Almighty he served for 48 years in various positions for the community. May Allah elevate his station and have mercy on his soul. Ameen.

Various politicians, religious leaders have conveyed their condolences to Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in remembering him as good friend working for humanity.
